FROM THE PRINCIPAL
21st June, 2026
Dear HNHS families,
World Cup fever has swept through the school over the past week with our final house event for the term, Inter-house Football, now in full swing. It has been fantastic to watch the action and to see so many students representing their houses and enjoying some fierce but good-spirited competition. The competition finishes on Friday with the fiercest battle of all – the annual staff vs students showdown. I trust the referee has a good supply of yellow and red cards...and ice packs!
Our students have also been involved in a lot of good-spirited competition on stage over the last few weeks and it has been a pleasure to witness such a high standard of performance from so many students. Following my last update, three of our chamber music groups performed at the regional competition and ZACoustic was awarded first place and will now compete at the national final in Wellington. This is the first time in my time at the school (which is quite a while!) that our students have reached this standard in chamber music.
Last Saturday, another three groups performed at the Smokefree Rockquest competition and at the end of the evening, Lily Moore was awarded the prize for best lyrics, Nicholas Squires the prize for best vocalist and Trolley, the award for top band.
BIG SING SUCCESS
To round off a busy term of music, our staff and young choristers spent the day competing at the Big Sing regional competition last Wednesday. Going from watching our inter-house football at lunchtime to watching our fantastic First XI Boys’ Hockey team win against long-time rivals Lindisfarne College to the Big Sing Gala concert was a pretty good reminder of our school culture.
The highlight of the Big Sing was once again the sheer number of HNHS students participating and the support and encouragement they offered each other and the other schools performing. That too is an important part of our school culture.
It would be remiss of me not to recognise the work of our new choral director Mrs Purdy who along with Mr and Mrs Cargill, have ensured that choral music is as strong as ever at HNHS. It would also be remiss not to acknowledge Future Prospect for being presented with the Audience Impact award, Sam Armenio for Best Student Accompanist and Thea Holm for Best Student Conductor.
SPORT CODE OF CONDUCT
On a less positive note, we have seen an increase in inappropriate behaviour during school sport from students, parents and spectators. For the most part, this kind of behaviour has been demonstrated by those associated with other schools, however, the rise in this kind of conduct is concerning. At a recent school assembly, I talked about the importance of adhering to our Sport Code of Conduct and reiterated my expectations about how our players are to represent themselves and our school. This is equally important for everyone on the sideline, to ensure that students can keep participating and enjoying school sport as they should.
Finally, congratulations to our robotics team who are making their way back from Canada after finishing in 9th place out of 39 teams competing at the FTC Cup and to Jayve Wire and Maddy Knight who represented the school and themselves so admirably at the regional Manu Kōrero competition on Friday.
