FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear HNHS families,
Firstly, I hope that everyone has had a fantastic first few days of school. The start of the year can be a challenging time for some students, especially those new to the school. Adjusting to a new school campus, new teachers and new classmates are all changes that require a degree of bravery and resilience. On that note, I have been particularly proud of the way our year 13 students have helped our new year 9 students to settle into the school over the last few days. The care and leadership that they demonstrated on the Year 9 Orientation Day last week was outstanding. We are fortunate to have a school culture where this level of thought and consideration is the norm rather than the exception.
Over the next few weeks, we will be holding special assemblies for our new year 9 students. Today’s assembly focuses on our expectations around presentation and conduct both in school and around the community. Next week they will have a presentation from our sports and cultural coordinators to help ensure that every student is taking advantage of the opportunities on offer here at HNHS. There is certainly plenty to choose from and over the last four days alone I have noted Schoology invitations for students to sign up for canoe polo, pickleball, tennis, futsal, water polo, cricket, Dungeons and Dragons, surfing, rugby league, music lessons, ki-o-rahi, afterschool drama, orienteering, volleyball, kapa haka, touch rugby, athletics and debating.
SCHOOLOGY
Keeping up to date with what is happening around the school, both inside the class and out, requires good organisation and this comes easier to some students than others. Next week, our office staff will be sending details of how parents and caregivers can sign up to Schoology. Access allows parents and caregivers to check homework deadlines as well as being able to scroll through the daily notices where information about events and extra-curricular activities is posted. Unfortunately, the default setting for parents signing up to Schoology is to send an email every time something is posted. I appreciate that this can be frustrating. It is also very easy to turn off, so accompanying the sign-up instructions will be a short video that explains how to turn off this feature.
SWIMMING SPORTS AND HOUSE EVENTS
Over the weekend, I encourage all students to dig around in the dress up box in preparation for our annual Swimming Sports day next Friday. Swimming and athletic sports showcase our top athletes but more importantly they are a chance for everyone to get involved and enjoy our house and school spirit. It is participation that inevitably secures a win for one house each year so I encourage every student to come with a positive attitude, dressed in house colours and ready for a fun day around the pool. We will have some sunblock available at the pool but it would be helpful for students to bring their own if possible.
INTERIM REPORTS
I would like to take this opportunity to alert parents to the forthcoming Interim Reports. These will be emailed to all families before the end of next week. The interim reports do not contain teacher comments but are an indication of how students have started the year with respect to three criteria - Active Learning, Responsible Citizenship and Innovation and Responsiveness. Please take some time to review the report and do not hesitate to get in touch with the House Tutor if you have any concerns.
