CAREERS

Overview

The Careers Centre is a place where first steps are taken on the career pathway for students.  The centre is available to assist students with subject selection and preparation for tertiary study and the world of work.

Services Offered

Careers Advice

Personalised career advice to help students identify their strengths and interests.  Many students have no idea which direction they want to take after high school and an appointment with Careers Adviser, Mrs Amanda Onekawa, can often be a great starting point.  Parents are very welcome to attend these appointments.

There is a wide range of resources available in the Careers Centre, including:

  • A computer suite for student use.

  • Prospectus and course booklets for universities, polytechnics, private training providers, industry training programmes and apprenticeships.

  • Gap year and student exchange information.

  • CV writing tools and support.

  • Future Pathways programme information.

  • Student job vacancies - advertised through Schoology.

Parent Involvement

Parents, caregivers and whanau are important partners with the school, and we welcome their involvement.  Discussion at home around future careers and study options is often seen as one of the most important factors in student decision-making.  For support in this area please contact us or visit us in the Careers Centre.  You may also find the Careers NZ website helpful.

Future Pathways - Gateway (Years 12 and 13)

Overview

Gateway opens a new pathway from school to the world of work. It’s a great opportunity for students to blend school study with workplace learning and training and assessment.

Benefits for Young People

Gateway helps students build their skills for employment, working in real workplaces on real tasks. It gives opportunities to try out potential careers and build links to industry training organisations, modern apprenticeships and workplaces.

Good news for employers

Gateway is a great opportunity to get extra part-time help, strengthen the students' links to industry training, to give something back to our Hawke's Bay community and maybe to assess potential employees before they hire them.

Courses

Gateway is made available to senior school students, preferably in their last year of school.
