FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Tēnā koutou e te whānau o te kura tuarua o maungawharau,

Firstly, a big thank you to everyone who joined us on Tuesday night for our New Parents Evening.  It was wonderful to be able to welcome around 200 new parents and caregivers to our school and I trust that everyone who attended found the evening useful.  We put together a New Parents Guide each year which contains a lot of useful information so I have included a link to the guide below.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL APPOINTMENT – KIRA CLARK

Earlier today, we announced the appointment of our new Deputy Principal on our school social media platforms.  I wanted to share the news here for those who have not yet seen the post or may not have subscribed to our pages.  The post is as follows:

We are excited to announce the appointment of our new Deputy Principal, Kira Clark, who will be starting at Havelock North High School from the beginning of term 2.  Kira comes to HNHS from Takapuna Grammar where she is currently Head of Faculty (Social Sciences) having also spent two years on the senior leadership team as Principal’s Nominee.  Kira completed a Masters in Educational Leadership (Distinction) in 2024 for which she received the Dean’s Honours Award for Outstanding Performance in Postgraduate Study.

Kira has extensive curriculum experience having been a national panel leader for History, moderator for NCEA Geography alongside nearly two decades experience in the classroom.

We are fortunate to have attracted a very strong field of applicants for the position, but Kira’s clear vision for education, approach to pastoral care and energy are a perfect fit for our school and community.  Kira and her family will be shifting to Hawke’s Bay over the term break and we look forward to welcoming her formally into our school next term.

SWIMMING SPORTS AND HOUSE EVENTS

Over the weekend, I encourage all students to dig around in the dress up box in preparation for our annual Swimming Sports day next Friday.  Swimming and athletic sports showcase our top athletes but more importantly they are a chance for everyone to get involved and enjoy our house and school spirit.  It is participation that inevitably secures a win for one house each year so I encourage every student to come with a positive attitude, dressed in house colours and ready for a fun day around the pool.  We will have some sunblock available at the pool but it would be helpful for students to bring their own if possible.

INTERIM REPORTS

I would like to take this opportunity to alert parents to the forthcoming Interim Reports.  These will be emailed to all families before the end of next week.  The interim reports do not contain teacher comments but are an indication of how students have started the year with respect to three criteria - Active Learning, Responsible Citizenship and Innovation and Responsiveness.  Please take some time to review the report and do not hesitate to get in touch with the House Tutor if you have any concerns.

Ngā manaakitanga,

Joel Wilton

Principal
