FROM THE PRINCIPAL
17th July, 2026
Dear HNHS families
I hope students have had a great term break and that everyone managed to take some time out over Matariki weekend. As a school, we celebrated Matariki for the first time with a hautapu ceremony just prior to the end of the term.
The dawn ceremony was organised by the year 9, 12 and 13 students and staff involved with our new mana tangata programme and I would like to congratulate them - not only for getting out of bed before sunrise - but more importantly for their fantastic organisation and the wonderful performance they gave as the sun rose over Havelock North.
START OF TERM
There are a couple of points I wanted to touch on before the term gets underway. The first is a plea to parents and caregivers (as I often do at this time) to ensure that your child is well-prepared for the term ahead. Holidays are often a time when we deviate from our usual routines and for students this may include changing sleep patterns and enjoying the absence of a uniform.
The first few days of each term are often when we have the most issues with uniform and unusually, tired students, hence my plea for everyone to start adjusting back to the realities of school life over the weekend. As always, our uniform code can be viewed on the school website and is clear with regard to our expectations.
Term 3 is easily the busiest in terms of schoolwork and assessment. Benchmark examinations take place in week six and there will be no shortage of internal assessments on the horizon for senior students. Success in NCEA is largely dependent on the work that students do over the next 10 weeks and there is no time to waste. For students who are heavily involved in sport, music and any other extra-curricular pursuits, good time management and planning are essential to ensure you keep your head above water.
Senior students need be clear about their assessment dates for the term ahead and would be wise to have a revision plan in place for the five weeks leading up to the Benchmark examinations. Junior students should recognise that the work they are doing is preparing them for senior school and it won’t be long before year 9 and 10 students are choosing their courses for 2027 and sitting their final examinations for the year.

CURRICULUM CHANGE & ENCOMPASS 2027
The community will be aware that schools are navigating a lot of change at present with revised curricula being introduced and new assessment systems on the horizon. The mathematics and English departments have been teaching the revised year 9 and 10 programmes to students since the start of 2026 and initial concerns remain regarding the sheer amount of content included in both curricula and the expected level of student performance.
Like many schools across the country, we have been working with our HOD’s to review the time allocated to each subject area in the junior school. The Ministry of Education suggests students study English and mathematics for four hours per week respectively - 30 minutes more than our timetable currently offers. Other areas have a higher allocation than suggested, however our assessment is that these subjects play a critical role in offering a broad and engaging school experience that nurtures well-rounded young people.
After considering all of the options, the Senior Leadership Team made the difficult decision to discontinue the year 9 and 10 Encompass programme from the start of 2027, thereby increasing class time in mathematics and English to four hours per week. The Encompass programme will continue at years 11, 12 and 13.
Finally, congratulations to Year 12 student, Oliver Hutchinson who represented New Zealand at the Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint World Championships in Halifax, Canada. He and fellow team mate Lachlan Harkness won the Junior Men’s K2 500m B final placing them 10th in the world which is a remarkable achievement.
Have a great weekend and I look forward to seeing staff and students back on Monday morning.
