Regional Futsal Success

Four HNHS futsal teams took part in the Hawke’s Bay Secondary Schools Futsal Championships last week.

Our junior boys, HNHS Gold, cruised through pool play, before beating HBHS in the semi-finals. Despite a valiant performance from HNHS in the final, NBHS proved too strong, winning 5 - 2.

After the cancellation of the girls competition, HNHS girls team was invited to join the junior boys competition.  The girls showed great commitment to organise themselves at short notice and rose to the challenge of faster, tougher play against the best boys in the region.  This should stand them in good stead for Nationals at the end of March.

In the senior division, demonstrating the strength and depth of futsal at the school, two HNHS teams were entered.  After a full round robin, the teams met in the semi-finals: HNHS Blue advanced to the final and HNHS Black to the 3rd/4th play-off.

In a repeat of last year’s senior final, in which they lost on penalties, HNHS Blue found themselves up against the very professional NBHS.  It proved tense early on as Napier Boys' High School took the lead but Havelock remained focused and took back control with an outstanding team performance to finish deserved 3 - 1 winners and Regional Champions.
