Drama

Havelock North High School was one of the first New Zealand schools to establish Drama as a subject from years 9 to 13.  The school is now rekwnown for the quality its Drama students and dramatic productions it presents.

Throughout the year various perfromers are welcomed to the school, such as the Aranui Theatre Company and Pandemonium Theatre.  Drama students are often given the opportunity to attend extra workshops with these groups to gain specific theatre skills.

After School Drama

A comprehensive extension programme is available to students interested in Drama in the form of after school Drama classes.  These are offered at both junior and senior levels, with the aim of exposing students to dramatic opportunities not always available in the classroom.  This programme is free to all Havelock North High School students.

The school maintains a close link with Hawke's Bay Youth Theatre (HABYT) and senior students regularly join the group for performances.

Havelock North HIgh School is also the home of the National Youth Drama School.  This was established by former Head of Drama, Ken Keys, and has been held at the school since its inception.  Each year our students have the opportunity to learn a huge range of disciplines from national and international experts.
