Our premier choir, Colla Voce, has represented New Zealand internationally. Orchestras, jazz bands, rock bands and many other instrumental ensembles provide wide-ranging opportunities for musical performance and group participation. Full-scale drama productions are a popular annual event where students can experience the discipline of rehearsal and the excitement of the 'opening night'. Theatresports provide a less formal forum for dramatic performance. Over a number of years the school has been recognised nationally for the high calibre of its Shakespeare productions.
Students have access to a vast array of opportunities in the Cultural Sector of HNHS. From debating, drama trips to Sydney and Wellington, music camps, visiting other schools on cultural exchange programmes in music and the arts, to experiencing touring performers such as the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Ugly Shakespeare Company and Art exhibitions like the Real Art Road Show.
There are inter-school competitions such as the Smokefree Stage Challenge, Rockquest and Big Sing, which welcome and encourage imagination and initiative from students. Outside of the classroom students can experience and take part in a wide selection of music groups and tuition, Kapa Haka and after school drama.
The possibilities are endless. Support from staff, mentors and the community are invaluable and available to all who wish to take up the challenge and take part in the many diverse and interesting happenings in the cultural sector of Havelock North High School.
