Havelock North High School Board of Trustees
Peter Hensman (Chairman)
I am a Chartered Accountant and Director of Accountancy firm Shepherd Hensman Limited. My wife Katrine and I have four children: Carly and Sally who are both ex-pupils and currently at university, Kate (Yr 11) and Thomas (Yr 9)
I have been Chairman of the Board of Trustees since being elected in 2007. I am also Chair of the Finance Committee.
I have been involved in ‘school life’ coaching the girl’s 1st XI cricket team and HNHS since 2004. I am also a keen supporter of many sports teams and cultural events that happen at our school.
I believe that HNHS is able to provide our children with a quality education in a safe and supportive environment. My goal is to ensure that the Board support the management and staff of the school in their aim to continue to produce fine citizens.
Don Kennedy (Deputy Chairman)
“I am married to Deborah and we live in Havelock North and have year 10 and year 13 daughters attending the High School,
I have been Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees since being elected in 2007 and I am also Chair of the Policy and Property Commitees. I am also a trustee of the HNHS Foundation.
Educated in Taranaki and at Victoria University, I have my own law practice in Hastings, mainly Family and Property law, specializing in children at risk.
Other Trusteeships include the Hawke’s Bay Community Law Centre and chairman of Bike Hawke’s Bay. I also serve on the Hastings District Council Cycling Strategy Group.
Sport participation includes cycling and tennis. An interest in photo-journalism and travel has led to media opportunities, including accreditation for Formula One and Australian Open tennis.”
Peter Keong
Parent elected to the Board of Trustees in 2007. Currently serving on the Finance Committee, I am Board of Trustees representative for the Special Needs Unit and a trustee on the Havelock North High School Foundation. I have also been involved with coaching boys' and girls' soccer and cricket teams for many years. I previously served on the Te Mata Primary School Board of Trustees for two terms, including one year as chairman.
I am married to Leanne and have two children, Emma, an ex-student currently studying at Massey University and Matthew, a year 12 student at Havelock North High School.
Amber-Logan Riley
I have been a member of the Board since being co-opted in August, 2008.
I am a mother of five children, aged 15 to 5 years. Originally from Waipatu, I spent some years in Auckland. After graduating from the Faculty of Medical and Health Science at The University of Auckland and working in the health sector, I returned home to Hawke’s Bay. I currently work in health research and health service evaluation.
As far as I’m concerned, Hawke’s Bay is the best place to live, work and raise a family, and I’m very pleased to have an association with HNHS and to be supporting the education and advancement of our young people.
Mary-anne Scott
This is my first term on the board at Havelock North High School and it has given me a valuable insight into the successful running of a big secondary school. I have a special interest in the adult education area, the publicity and marketing of our school and, because of my children and my work, I am very interested in the music department and the sporting life of the school, especially rugby.
I have four sons; Daniel, John and Christopher are all past pupils and Thomas is in year 12 this year. HNHS is a school with so much to offer and I am pleased to have been involved with it for twelve years.
Natalie Stevens
I am one of the parent representatives on the Board of Trustees. I have two children at the school, one in year 11 and one in year 12 who probably both rue the day their mother became a board member.
We have a great team who are totally committed to shaping the school to enable our kids to be the best they can be and achieve their dreams. Perhaps the hardest part of the job is juggling the finances amongst competing projects, maintenance and new facilities to position our school for future requirements. The most rewarding is hearing how dedicated the staff are to each and every child in the school.
My bet is that when my kids move on they will reflect on what a truly great school HNHS is and how it always gave them a sense of belonging and achievement.
Alison Sutherland (Teacher Representative)
I teach Social Studies and Geography at school and have been on the staff here for many generations. I am a strong supporter of our school and greatly value the links that we have with our community. My two daughters attended HNHS and speak positively of the education and the opportunities that they received here. As teacher representative it is my responsibility to represent staff viewpoint to the board and to provide the necessary liaison between board and staff in current issues and future planning. I am a member of the Policy and Personnel sub-committees.
