Peter Hensman (Chairman)
I am a Chartered Accountant and Director of Accountancy firm Shepherd Hensman Limited. My wife Katrine and I have four children: Carly and Sally who are both ex-pupils and currently at university, Kate (Yr 11) and Thomas (Yr 9)
I have been Chairman of the Board of Trustees since being elected in 2007. I am also Chair of the Finance Committee.
I have been involved in ‘school life’ coaching the girl’s 1st XI cricket team and HNHS since 2004. I am also a keen supporter of many sports teams and cultural events that happen at our school.
I believe that HNHS is able to provide our children with a quality education in a safe and supportive environment. My goal is to ensure that the Board support the management and staff of the school in their aim to continue to produce fine citizens.
Don Kennedy (Deputy Chairman)
“I am married to Deborah and we live in Havelock North and have year 10 and year 13 daughters attending the High School,
I have been Deputy Chairman of the Board of Trustees since being elected in 2007 and I am also Chair of the Policy and Property Commitees. I am also a trustee of the HNHS Foundation.
Educated in Taranaki and at Victoria University, I have my own law practice in Hastings, mainly Family and Property law, specializing in children at risk.
Other Trusteeships include the Hawke’s Bay Community Law Centre and chairman of Bike Hawke’s Bay. I also serve on the Hastings District Council Cycling Strategy Group.
Sport participation includes cycling and tennis. An interest in photo-journalism and travel has led to media opportunities, including accreditation for Formula One and Australian Open tennis.”
Amber-Logan Riley
I have been a member of the Board since being co-opted in August, 2008.
I am a mother of five children, aged 15 to 5 years. Originally from Waipatu, I spent some years in Auckland. After graduating from the Faculty of Medical and Health Science at The University of Auckland and working in the health sector, I returned home to Hawke’s Bay. I currently work in health research and health service evaluation.
As far as I’m concerned, Hawke’s Bay is the best place to live, work and raise a family, and I’m very pleased to have an association with HNHS and to be supporting the education and advancement of our young people.
Russell Farmery
Born and raised in Hastings, I went to Hastings Boys' High School and then on to complete a Bachelor of Business Studies at Massey University. Upon graduating in 1984, I joined A. C. Nielsen (a multinational market research company) as a graduate trainee in the data collection department. I moved up through many roles in the company in New Zealand, becoming the Managing Director in 1996. In late 1997 I was offered the first of several senior roles in the US, Hong Kong, India and China.
Late 2007 saw my family and I move back to NZ to settle in Hawke's Bay for family and lifestyle reasons. We chose to live in Havelock North for the climate, village lifestyle and very good schooling options it offer. I have two children at Havelock North High School, in years 10 and 12.
My personal interests are varied. I am an avid golfer and enjoy reading, travel, concerts and sporting events. As such, I am very impressed with the school's encouragement of academic and non-academic pursuits.
Paul Konia
My daughter is a current Year 10 student. I am keen to play a role in ensuring that the children in our community receive the best teaching, learning and ongoing improvement for student achievement. As a teacher myself, I believe that I bring a balanced view between governance and management. Learning and teaching is very important which is why a support ongoing professional development, knowledge, management and leadership.
I am proud to be Hawke's Bay born and bred. My passion for learning and education led to receiving a degree in Thereapeurtic Recreation at the Eastern Institute of Technology, followed by a Graduate Diploma in Secondary School Teaching through Massey University.
I am currently a teacher and house leader at Flaxmere College. I am passionate bout youth and their education. My past experiences include a role as a Hospital Play Specialist at Kids First Children's Hospital, Middlemore, Auckalnd. In addition, I was employed as a Recreational Therapist at Middlemore Hospital Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit at Auckland, a support group for your people
I am involved in a local church youth group and facilitate recreational and sporting activities for local youth. I also volunteer at the Hawke's Bay Regional Prison, providing cultural and spiritual guidance. I am also involved in touch rugby and mixed rugby at Flaxmere College.
Jock Mackintosh
I grew up in Waimarama, attended university, where I gained a BBS, and shifted back to Hawke's Bay three years ago, having spent the previous 18 years in Wellington. In Wellington I was Chairman of the City's Life Education Trust and until recently I was a Board of Trustees member at Hereworth. My background is in marketing, especially communications, and I am CEO of the Regional Sports Park.
Alison Sutherland (Teacher Representative)
I teach Social Studies and Geography at school and have been on the staff here for many generations. I am a strong supporter of our school and greatly value the links that we have with our community. My two daughters attended HNHS and speak positively of the education and the opportunities that they received here. As teacher representative it is my responsibility to represent staff viewpoint to the board and to provide the necessary liaison between board and staff in current issues and future planning. I am a member of the Policy and Personnel sub-committees.
