Gateway

A PATHWAY TO CAREERS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

Gateway opens a new pathway from school to the world of work. It’s a great opportunity for students to blend school study with workplace learning and experience. Learning is assessed in the workplace, counting towards national qualifications.

Benefits for young people

Gateway helps students build their skills for employment, working in real workplaces on real tasks. It gives opportunities to try out potential careers and build links to industry training organisations, modern apprenticeships and workplaces.
The school's timetable has a facility to allow students to take a programme outside the school campus without missing other classes.
The Gateway Programme takes up two timetable lines on a student’s timetable. It will include a set of generic unit standards such as First Aid and Health and Safety in the Workplace, plus a set of units that go toward qualifications in their chosen career area.

Good news for employers

Gateway is a great opportunity to get extra part-time help, strengthen the students' links to industry training, to give something back to our Hawke's Bay community and maybe to assess potential employees before you hire them.  Through the Gateway programme, Havelock North High School will endeavour to equip their students for the workplace and provide learning resources.

Gateway courses

Gateway is made available to senior school students, preferably in their last year of school.

Gateway:

  • delivers hands-on practical learning that leads to nationally-recognised qualifications
  • builds students' workplace experience, helping them move smoothly from school to work
  • is managed by the HNHS Careers Centre staff, who customise the learning and select students to complement the employers' business.  Gateway is funded and monitored by the Tertiary Education Commission.

Gateway/STAR the difference

GATEWAY is for students who have a very clear career focus.  Gateway only includes courses that can be assessed in the workplace as this is a requirement.

STAR, on the other hand, is more flexible and leaves room for work exploration and tasters.  We encourage our full year STAR students to attend a work placement for 1-2 terms, but for some courses this is not a requirement.  e.g. extension courses at tertiary level where no workplace is required.

At Havelock North High School a full year Gateway programme is delivered within a class setting over two subject lines on a student's timetable.  Because of this, students need to select their other subjects carefully so as not to limit their future subject choices or impact on entry criteria for future tertiary study.
