English
OVERVIEW
We aim to foster the development of communication and language skills for pupils of all ability levels. By using appropriate resources, we also aim to encourage and enable understanding, appreciation and the use of language in its many forms: reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and presenting.
COURSES
All courses, from junior to senior levels, are designed to cater for the wide range of student ability in our school. In the junior school we offer learning assistance, mainstream and extension classes.
In year 11 we offer two levels of English Literacy Skills classes which focus on the achievement of English literacy and more. Mainstream NCEA classes offer up to 24 credits and include 12 credits generated by external examinations.
In year 12 these divisions continue with the main focus being university entrance literacy. Courses are flexible to maximize the potential of each student. A group of interested students is offered additional classes to prepare for university scholarship examinations at year 13.
In year 13 we offer 15 and 21 credit courses as well as additional classes for students who want to be challenged by the National Scholarship Examination.
WHY CHOOSE ENGLISH?
The study of English provides students with skills for living. The development of literacy skills enables students to engage with and enjoy the English language for different purposes and in a variety of text forms. You will improve your ability to read, write, listen, speak, view and present. As well, by studying great literature, you can develop an understanding of how these texts are created and learn from the ideas that the writer explores. English and literacy skills are important in all subject areas and most career options.
The English Department supports a wide range of activities that reflect the successful teaching of the above areas. In debating, mooting, drama, creative writing and in both internal and external examinations, students achieve at impressive levels both at school and in competitions. In 2007 four students achieved scholarship (including one at outstanding level) and in 2008 one student achieved at scholarship level.
